Science from Home: COVID-19 cannot stop fun science summer camps
Baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, food coloring, water, eggs, corn syrup – one doesn’t have to be in a lab to learn about science. Introducing science to kids can be as easy as a trip to the kitchen.
Faced with the prospect of having their many summer camps cancelled due to Covid-19, the SciGenie team, headed by Alicia McEldon, immediately sought to convert their offerings to virtual classes. Understanding the need for social interaction and the desire to continue building social skills while social distancing, the team made this an emphasis in their class design. In their Hands on Science camp, for example, kids do everything from making their own ice cream to various chemical reaction experiments. These interactive projects allow them to investigate, ask questions of, and make hypotheses with other campers all while having fun.
A parent who recently enrolled their daughter in a virtual camp commented, “Over the last 2 days my daughter has participated on the virtual science projects with SciGenie. She absolutely loved how they taught science in a unique way that stimulates the mind. I recommend this to all parents looking to get their kids critically thinking and excited about the wonders of science!” Another grandparent who signed up their grandchildren to participate said, “Kudos to the SciGenie team for their engaging approach with the virtual classes. My grandkids recently took the Hands on Science Class. They made ice cream. The staff was patient and explained the steps so that all involved knew exactly what to do and the ice cream was delicious. I recommend the SciGenie classes as an engaging option for fun learning during social distancing!”
COVID-19 may keep our children at home, but SciGenie can keep them safely engaged while learning math, science and other critical life skills. Besides the Hands On Science Camp, they also offer Coding, Chess, Forensic Science, Game Design, Space Discovery and Creative Art. All are hands-on and interactive. You can find their virtual camps and classes at 6crickets.com where choice providers like SciGenie across the nation are sourced and parents can search and register with one form and one payment across different providers.
